Computerbilities, Inc. takes great pride in its Information Technology (I.T.) know-how, customer assistance, and unmatched I.T. support and security. The company's president, Adam Pittman, started Computerbilities with no money or resources in 1995. He is aware that there are many I.T. services companies in North Carolina. Therefore, they must be more dependable, have better communication techniques, provide cutting-edge solutions, and possess in-depth experience to compete in this market.
In the past and before the internet, Adam relied on the library to research. He found inspiration in stories of successful entrepreneurs who faced challenges before achieving success, like Soichiro Honda, founder of Honda, who got fired from Toyota; Paul Orfalea, founder of Kinkos, who had dyslexia and was "mechanically inept," Milton Hershey, who failed three times before finally succeeding, and Walt Disney, who his newspaper editor fired for apparently "not having good ideas or any imagination." Despite having financial difficulties and personal responsibilities, he found motivation in books like "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living" by Dale Carnegie, "Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap...And Others Don't" by Jim Collins, and "Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive" by Harvey MacKay.
Adam believes that experiencing financial struggle without access to funds has humbled him and taught him empathy and respect. Once he resolved his tax issues and gained confidence, he hired his first employee to help grow his business. He is grateful for his employees and their hardships, allowing him to create a supportive environment that helps them achieve their goals and improve Computerbilities. It is essential to have competent and hard-working employees to succeed. Adam is grateful for his team and the opportunity to shape them into what Computerbilities needs.
Due to financial constraints, Adam was initially cautious in his decision-making, focusing on profitability, avoiding losses, feeding his family, and the consequences of not deciding. However, as his confidence grew, he took more risks and invested in marketing. After trying different strategies with limited success, he took a significant risk and purchased the Technology Marketing Toolkit with the P.C. Member option from Robin Robins. This decision paid off, leading to substantial growth and a team of 12 employees. Through the Technology Marketing Toolkit, he was introduced to Dr. Nido Qubein. This impacted his decision-making process and included the best, the worst, and the most likely thing that could happen and bring him closer to the goal.
After he left the U.S. Air Force, Adam worked for a subcontractor, DSI Industries, in New York City as the Vice President of Operations. However, the recession of 1989 caused many contractors and builders to go bankrupt, leaving many empty buildings in NYC. Even long-standing companies had to shut down, including DSI Industries, which owed $1.2 Million ($2.9 Million in Today's money) in payroll taxes. Since Adam was the account signatory, the IRS imposed a tax lien on him. This significant tax lien could prevent him from accessing capital. Adam, who had expertise in computer technology from his time in the USAF, opened a company, Computerbilities, Inc., to support his family. Computerbilities changed its focus when Zema, a company that made flea and tick control products for pets, asked him to assist with their networking in 1996. As he needed cash to feed his family, he decided to help them out. This led to Computerbilities becoming one of the first I.T. managed service providers in North Carolina. Eventually, early in 2000, the IRS released Adam's tax lien.
Adam believes that there are no secrets to leadership and that humility, respect, and empathy are crucial qualities for a leader. For effective leadership, they should always lead by setting a good example. A leader should be accountable not only to themselves but also to others, including their employees. Additionally, having a clear and long-term vision for Computerbilities and sharing it with the team is essential. Moreover, setting goals that benefit both Computerbilities and employees is critical to Adam. When employees understand the benefits and are inspired by the vision and the bigger picture, they become motivated to achieve the goals. Again, he must stress the importance of having the right people in the right seats on the bus, as he learned from Jim Collins.
Adam thinks individuals may learn by hearing, seeing, or experiencing. He believes that excellent communication is essential for education and communication improvement. He instructed his staff to talk to customers, follow up through email, and provide hands-on assistance. He loves input, even negative feedback, for learning and improvement. His feedback strategy might frighten some customers, as he routinely asks customers for negative feedback, even if they insist everything is OK. He encourages staff to raise difficulties by treating them as a team and being accessible. Like anyone, he can occasionally lose his temper, but he improves on everything based on honest employee and customer feedback. Adam wants his workers to execute their jobs thoroughly, but more. He wants them to go the extra mile and be proud. He doesn't expect people to accomplish that without a role model; therefore, he does that and holds himself responsible.
Computerbilities uses a web-based ticketing system to export and analyze data. This system helps them identify profitable clients, track time spent on tasks, identify employees needing training, and monitor profitability. They also analyze marketing campaigns and utilize Google Analytics on their websites. Implementing Artificial Intelligence in resolving tickets is expected to enhance efficiency and accuracy, ultimately improving customer and employee satisfaction.
The industry has undergone significant changes since Adam started it. He believes cybersecurity and compliance will be the most significant change in the industry and expects advancements in the next five years. The government is already enforcing compliance with NIST regulations in specific industries. The company will continue prioritizing technologies that manage and reduce risks, but it must convince clients to adopt better controls.
