Industry-Era sits down with Ashlee Clarke, CEO & Co-Chairwoman of Empower Ocean Media Group, to explore leadership, creativity, and the kind of bold thinking that reshapes industries.
Industry-Era: Your career began in live television. How did those early experiences shape your leadership style in the advertising world?
Ashlee Clarke: Live TV is unforgiving. There’s no room for hesitation—every second counts, every word carries weight. You have to absorb complexity instantly, distill it into something meaningful, and communicate with absolute clarity. In advertising, the stakes are different but the principle is the same. Boardroom decisions, client strategies, and agency growth all demand clarity under pressure. I learned early that leadership isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about enabling others to act decisively with confidence. That mindset informs everything we do.
Industry-Era: What inspired you to transition from media personality to leading an agency?
Ashlee Clarke: I saw a gap in the market—not just in creativity or media execution, but in the way agencies operate. Most agencies were either safe or reactive. I wanted to build a culture-first agency where Clients First wasn’t a tagline, it was a lived principle. A place where people felt empowered to take risks, where failure was part of the path to innovation, and where outcomes weren’t just numbers—they were the measure of our integrity. From the beginning, NitroC—and later Empower—were built to be more than agencies. We were designed to be true growth partners, integrating creative, media, and business strategy so we could sit at the table as collaborators, not vendors. When clients feel prioritized and supported at every level of growth, results follow.
“Scale and agility can coexist—if you protect culture and design systems with intention.”
Industry-Era: Your agency group has grown dramatically, including the $1.5 billion merger. How do you maintain agility and a strong culture at that scale?
Ashlee Clarke: Scale and agility can coexist if you design the right systems. We preserve independence for nimbleness but centralize technology and procurement to gain efficiency without bureaucracy. Every hire is mentored; every voice is encouraged. We have incentives that reward bold thinking, collaboration, and measurable impact, not just individual output. My philosophy is simple: empowerment drives performance. Empowerment fuels innovation and wins markets. You can’t put a price on culture—it’s how we sustain growth without losing what makes us distinct.
Industry-Era: You’re known for being bold. How do you define risk in your work?
Ashlee Clarke: Boldness isn’t a risk—it’s a responsibility. If you see an opportunity to lead, innovate, or disrupt and you don’t act, that’s the real risk. From securing marquee clients like JD Sports, PetSmart, and Whataburger to pioneering new industry standards, boldness means calculated courage. It’s not about being reckless; it’s about assessing the potential, preparing meticulously, and then moving decisively. Leadership is active, not passive. If no one takes the leap, nothing changes—and that’s unacceptable to me. Always, Bring the Heat!
Industry-Era: How do you balance emotional storytelling with measurable results?
Ashlee Clarke: That’s the core of what we do. Creativity without accountability is just decoration. Every campaign, every strategy, every client interaction must be measured by its real-world impact. But results alone aren’t enough—you have to connect emotionally. People buy from brands they trust, they relate to, they feel something for. We obsess over results and emotional resonance in equal measure. Data guides us, but empathy fuels us. That’s how campaigns resonate and move markets simultaneously.
Industry-Era: Empower’s ethos extends beyond campaigns. Can you explain the role of empowerment in your leadership philosophy?
Ashlee Clarke: Live Empowered is not marketing fluff, it’s a standard. It means mentoring rising talent, championing equity, and creating a culture where voices matter. Influence without purpose is meaningless. That’s why I’ve led initiatives like the first tax-free tampon and advocacy for domestic violence prevention. Every decision, every initiative, is about creating impact that transcends profit. Empowerment is the engine that powers performance, creativity, and influence. When your team, your clients, and your industry feel empowered, that’s when real transformation happens.
Industry-Era: With so much on your plate—mergers, campaigns, producing—how do you manage it all?
Ashlee Clarke: Discipline, focus, and intentionality. I stay hands-on in business because leadership isn’t delegation—it’s visibility, accountability, and engagement. At the same time, I make space for mentorship and philanthropy. The key is integration, not compartmentalization. Every facet of life informs the other, and every action has purpose. I don’t just show up; I show up fully.
Industry-Era: What’s next for you?
Ashlee Clarke: We’ll continue to push boundaries and deliver campaigns that inspire change while driving measurable outcomes. Our mission is clarity, courage, and uncompromising impact in the marketing and entertainment worlds. Every campaign, every partnership, every strategic decision is an opportunity to lead, to innovate, and to leave a legacy.
