HMS Inc. is like real estate on steroids, according to the founder, Bob Lovell. They provide their agents with clients who are truly interested in becoming first-time home buyers. They spend a great deal of time educating their clients and finding out what their real wants and needs are. They become clients for life, and about 65% of their new business comes from referrals from clients who have purchased 1-3 homes from HMS over the past 28 years.
Bob shares specifics of his life experiences to help others understand the challenges of thriving and carving out a niche for himself in the market. It was when he worked six days a week after school to help his mother pay the rent after an accident left Bob's father permanently crippled when he was 11. Hospitalization lasted three years for his father. Bob's mother had a convent laundry job. His mother was hospitalized shortly after his father's injury after falling down the convent's stairs with a large load of laundry. After that, Bob took care of the family expenses, rent, and his slow brother and sister's basic requirements. Bob continued selling magazines door-to-door for six years to support the family. The revenue covered expenses to be together, and the schools never found out the three kids were home alone most of the time.
At the age of 17, Bob enlisted in the army with his mother's permission. He finished high school early in 1968 and served in the Army from 1968 to 1971. After two years of service, he received a hardship discharge so he could return home and support his two disabled parents. His mother had already undergone foot amputations due to her diabetes. Bob started his own insurance business and was successful in supporting his parents financially. Due to his achievements in the insurance industry, he was hired in Europe to assess the insurance needs of American soldiers stationed abroad, which allowed him to further support his family. Seeking relief from the cold Minnesota winters, he purchased a property in Florida for his parents. Unfortunately, his mother passed away in 1992 and his father in 1994. Following his father's death, Bob moved to Dallas, Texas, and began a career in real estate.
In 1994, Bob bought a new home in Plano, Texas. However, he was very disappointed with the process, as the realtor was only concerned with making a profit, and the builder's mortgage company charged him more than expected. This experience motivated Bob to start a company that provides honest advice and assistance on builders, lenders, and credit issues. He also wanted to help renters become homeowners, which led to the founding of Home Marketing Services, Inc. in 1997. Over the years, the company has successfully helped over 10,000 families achieve the American Dream of homeownership.
Later, Bob came to know that his brother was still struggling in Minnesota. He sold his furniture to get insulin so he could survive. Bob bought a little home for him and his wife, Jan, in Texas. Bob improved his brother's credit enough for him to buy the home after several years. Eventually, the diabetes his brother inherited took his foot, then his leg, and then his life.
The financial support of his parents and brothers prevented Bob from attending college. He always wanted to graduate from college. Even at 73, Bob maintains it's not too late. His only daughter, on the other hand, has double masters. She followed in his footsteps to serve in the military and continue her education. ‘Like father, like daughter.’ Our money says that Bob will acquire that degree at any age. In addition, Bob, who is affectionately known as the "Bless Your Heart Guy," is dedicated to helping those in need and supports charities for veterans and homeless shelters through both his time and financial contributions.
Bob has helped clients in need at HMS like he has helped his family his whole life. HMS initially aimed to help renters who wanted to become homeowners, as they believed these individuals lacked the resources or knowledge to do so. They started by contacting renters over the phone and found that 90% were interested in owning a home. As their sales grew to $100 million, they began advertising on radio and later on TV, specifically targeting renters through cable networks. The company goes beyond just selling their services and creates a friendly and helpful atmosphere for their clients. They value long-term relationships and provide ongoing education and support. They also keep their clients updated on market changes and opportunities for improvement in real estate.
The company values agents who genuinely want to help people and believe in providing education on home buying. They prioritize their clients' needs and aim to assist them, even if they are not ready to purchase a home yet. The company promotes setting personal goals instead of imposing them on their agents, as long as they have made sincere efforts to help clients achieve the American dream of owning a home.
Despite facing numerous challenges over the years, such as the 2008 recession, recent increases in interest rates, a lack of housing inventory during COVID, an employee stealing funds, and frivolous lawsuits, HMS remains committed to its mission of assisting people in achieving the American dream of homeownership!
