In large part because of Carl Armato, Novant Health, an integrated network of physician clinics, outpatient facilities, and hospitals that delivers high-quality care to improve the health of communities in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, has become a force for positive change in the regions it serves.
Carl possesses the rare combination of professional expertise and personal empathy for people in need, particularly when it comes to their healthcare. When Carl comes to a meeting, he participates as an experienced leader – president and CEO of Novant Health – as well as a patient. Carl was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at just 18 months old and joins every conversation with the perspective of a person with a chronic health condition. Carl’s personal health needs and experiences as a patient always inform his work as a transformative healthcare leader. He is committed to using that perspective to keep patients and the members of the communities that Novant Health serves at the forefront of everything it does – both within its walls and out in the community. Every action Carl takes is a step toward fulfilling the Novant Health mission, to improve the health of our communities, one person at a time. He leads by example, inspiring others in honoring the Novant Health promise to relentlessly pursue remarkable care every day – so those they serve can expect the compassionate, expert, personal experience they deserve.
For example, in July 2021, he and the leadership team led the decision to implement a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for all Novant Health team members. Recognizing that we all have a role to play in ending the pandemic and receiving the vaccine is an essential step in the fight against COVID-19, Carl was steadfast in his decision that was in the best interest of public health and essential for the safety of their patients, team members, and communities. Leading with courage and by example exemplifies Carl’s approach to leadership.
Carl’s core values align with Novant Health's: compassion, diversity, equity and inclusion, personal excellence, teamwork, courage and safety. He also knows that Novant Health’s business cares for all people, starting with their own team members. Carl believes effective leaders empower their people with voice and choice. As the Omicron surge raged and they looked ahead to the third year of the pandemic, Carl and the leadership team took time to listen to their team members’ needs and saw the necessity to take bold action: a $40 million investment in Novant Health’s people who have worked tirelessly to keep their community safe and healthy. This investment provided every team member, assistant director level and below, with the opportunity to choose an extra 40 hours of PTO or the pay equivalent. This is one way that Novant Health has thanked its teams through an unexpected gift, to demonstrate that they are valued and are all essential to delivering on the Novant Health mission and keeping its community strong. By offering the ability to choose, Novant Health recognizes that every member of their team has different needs and they are doing their best to make sure those are taken care of.
Novant Health’s growth in the next few years will take many forms inside and outside of our facilities, both organically and through partnerships. It will remain centered on Novant Health’s mission, vision, and values, particularly a commitment to health equity and providing access to healthcare to all.
Novant Health takes an innovative approach to solving the biggest challenges in healthcare, one that is more aligned with the retail or technology industry’s approach than the traditional healthcare industry approach. Novant Health believes it is only as strong as the ecosystem in which it operates, so it applies the build-or-buy approach or, most notably, a co-create approach to innovation by collaborating with unconventional partners to develop leading solutions that meet patients/consumers where they are.
