Happy employees makes productive employees!

As a leader, Susan believes having a clear vision is critical to any business success and that this vision is clearly communicated to the team so everyone in the organization is aligned. Secondly, leaders must develop critical listening skills and be open to receiving feedback, whether it’s from their customers, employees, or partners. Susan believes these various stakeholders may hold the key to your company’s future success! Vitrium wouldn’t have been where it is today if Susan hadn’t listened to their customers and employees. The company’s product roadmap, even today, is largely based on customer feedback, while the company’s core values have largely been shaped by the group of employees that Susan has hired over the years. And thirdly, Susan claims you must love what you do! Susan personally thrives under pressure, so she takes pleasure in helping Vitrium overcome the many challenges and obstacles it encounters as it strives to grow and expand.

Susan's basic principles of honesty, professionalism, and politeness permeate the entire organization at Vitrium today. Success in business and in life depends on how well leaders learn to take criticism in stride and use it to improve. At Vitrium, it’s important to Susan that the leadership team (and all employees) remain both professional and polite when receiving constructive criticism of their product, policies, or procedures. And they should do the same when they provide constructive criticism to a partner, a supplier, or an employee during a performance review. She also thinks it's important to explain your reasoning when delivering criticism or making a choice. People are more likely to agree with constructive criticism or well-reasoned decisions.

Vitrium System’s digital rights management (DRM) software safeguards businesses' documents, images, videos, and audio. Susan Daly, Vitrium's President and CEO, shares that DRM software protects valuable intellectual property (IP) from unauthorized copying, sharing, or redistribution. Businesses enjoy Vitrium's strong security, flexibility, and ease of use, but what really sets them apart from their competitors is they don't require end users to download any plug-ins or proprietary software to view protected content. This attention between balancing the need for protection with seamless user access has been Vitrium’s focus for nearly 20 years!

Susan Daly joined Vitrium Systems in 2010 as the Director of Marketing but was promoted to CEO a year later. When she first joined Vitrium, the company was still a start-up and struggling financially. Susan saw a lot of untapped opportunity in the company though and, while working closely with an outside consulting firm, convinced them that this was a company worth saving. After a corporate restructuring in 2011, Susan was asked to be the CEO and roll out the 5-year business plan she worked on with the consultants. While still only in her early 30’s, Susan was surprised by the offer, but enthusiastically said yes since she believed she could lead this company to success. Vitrium had a wonderful product with great customers, and she saw they were solving a market problem: how to protect the IP contained in documents and other content without sacrificing user experience. Today, she is proud to say Vitrium is a growing, thriving, and profitable business!

One of Susan’s guiding principles for how she runs a business is that “happy employees make productive employees." This is why Susan chose “Family First” as one of Vitrium’s top core values. If a Vitrium employee needs to care for a sick child, a departed loved one, or an aging parent, Susan always assures them family comes first. Susan recalls her organic experience when she delivered her first child a year after becoming CEO in 2011. She managed to turn a failing startup business into a success while juggling the demands of running a business with being a new mom. After this, Susan recognized that family is everything and developed family-friendly policies at Vitrium, allowing staff to take time off to care for a sick child, aid an elderly parent, or even for something as simple as taking their child to hockey practice or a school play. She has found that this is the #1 reason employees love working at Vitrium and why the company has very little turnover today. Susan thanks her kids, Lucas and Lyla, who were the inspiration behind Vitrium’s "family-first" principles. She explains that having children humbles you and grounds you, gives you perspective on life, and teaches you tolerance and understanding, all of which have helped her become the admired leader she is today.

When it comes to Vitrium’s hiring methods, Susan says successful organizations should focus on hiring the "right people for the right seats". Of course, technical skill is always an important factor when hiring for positions at a software-as-as-service (SaaS) company like Vitrium, but ‘fit’ goes a long way too. And Susan believes fit is largely determined by your company’s core values (Vitrium’s core values are well documented on its careers page: www.vitrium.com/careers). This is why Vitrium spends extra time developing a ‘fit profile’ for candidates before they even begin their hiring process. They want to ensure they hire team members who have high Emotional Intelligence (EQ), no egos, and good communication skills. When Susan looks around at the team she has today, she is extremely proud of them, as they all fit well within the company culture, and they are all an amazing group of people!

Today, thanks to the incredible team that Susan has built up over the years, Vitrium is one of the leading DRM software providers in the market. Just read their Capterra or G2 reviews to see how they differentiate themselves from the competition. They support more file types than their competitors, they have exceptional customer service, and their DRM software can integrate virtually with any 3rd party system including Learning Management Systems (LMS), Content Management Systems (CMS), Association Management Systems (AMS), CRM systems, eCommerce systems, and more.

With customers around the world protecting hundreds of thousands of documents, images, videos, and audio files, and over a million end users accessing that content, Vitrium DRM software can be used to protect any intellectual property. They continue to enhance and scale their software to support the demands of larger organizations, adding more DRM, control, and collaboration features, but never sacrificing what they offer to their smaller customers. With Susan at the helm as CEO, they’ll remain focused on helping their customers and partners, but most importantly, their employees with a continued focus on their ‘family-first’ policies!
