“Leading with Grit”

Seeing the bigger picture has always been an asset for any leader. But for Tom Vo, CEO & Chairman of the Board, Nutex Health Inc., understanding the gravity of the situation and working towards achieving more has been second nature. Being a great communicator adds to his qualities that help nurture his teams and resolve client issues. Tom is honest and works with integrity, motivating those around him and rewarding success while having the guts to admit failures. One can say he has the grit to transform any project and company.

Tom has always been a support system for budding entrepreneurs trying to establish themselves. He constantly tries to mentor and passes on his life and career lessons on successes and failures when he can. As a former EY Entrepreneur of the Year, he tries to attend the annual events as much as possible to impart his knowledge. “I always advise new entrepreneurs to solve a problem that will benefit society. Once you find this solution, never, ever give up,” he says. “I have made numerous mistakes, but I have learned from them. My career has been a learning opportunity and taught me the importance of believing in others, including my management team, and leading with patience and perseverance.”

But today, Tom has become one of the best leaders to look up to, making him a role model to many. “I take criticism very well. I have never taken myself too seriously, so it’s easy to take pointers on how to improve,” explains Tom. “Because of my philosophy of not being the smartest person in the room, I always try to learn from others and ask a lot of questions, which will elicit a lot of criticism from others.”

With this mindset, Tom has been taking the company to great heights. Nutex Health Inc. is a healthcare management and operations company with a Hospital Division and a Population Health Management Division. The Hospital Division owns, develops and operates innovative health care models, including micro-hospitals, specialty hospitals, and hospital outpatient departments (HOPDs). This growing division currently owns and operates 21 facilities in 8 states. The Population Health Management Division operates provider networks such as Independent Physician Associations (IPAs).

Their Management Services Organizations (MSOs) provide management, administrative, and other support services to their IPAs. The cloud-based proprietary technology platform aggregates data across multiple information systems, settings, and sources to create a holistic view of each patient and provider, allowing them to deliver more excellent quality care more efficiently. “We are always looking at technology to decrease costs and increase efficiencies.

The latest implementation is to streamline our accounting, payroll, HR, benefits, and credentialing into one package since we are all consolidated now,” says Tom. “This is a huge task considering we have about 70 different LLCs that we need to integrate. The future Nutex embraces technology to provide the best possible care for our patients.”

The company’s most significant achievement has been its ability to provide the best patient care at each of its hospitals. To provide the best patient care, they had to ensure that all the doctors and nurses were happy. “If you have angry doctors and nurses, you will have angry patients. So that’s why we execute on the physician partnership model to make sure that our business has complete alignment with the providers,” elucidates Tom. “In addition, we became a public company, in part, so that we can offer our nursing staff stock option so that they too, have ownership in the company. This results in happy employees and having much higher retention rate. The end results are happy, satisfied patients.”

In the future, the company has plans to expand its footprint by opening over 20 locations in the next few years. “We completely believe in the model and feel that we will make a difference in the lives of the people in the communities we enter,” says Tom. “Patient care is our number one priority. And every single decision that we make revolves around how to make patient care better. Even the decision to become a public company was designed to improve patient care directly.” IE
